The University of Wisconsin—Madison School of Medicine and Public Health, the first school of medicine and public health in the country, offers a variety of health degree programs. In addition to the M.D., M.D./M.P.H. (master of public health), and M.D./Ph.D. degrees, the school runs programs including a Genetic Counseling Program, Radiologic Technology School, and Ultrasound (Sonography) School.
The University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health sends its medical students to communities throughout the state for training, clinical rotations, and preceptorships. In Madison, the school uses the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics as a teaching hospital, as well as William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital, Meriter Hospital, and St. Mary’s Hospital. M.D. students can opt to focus their education through two programs: the Wisconsin Academy for Rural Medicine (WARM) and Training in Urban Medicine and Public Health (TRIUMPH).
School faculty are actively involved in a wide variety of research projects, and the school has more than 30 research institutes, including the Center for Tobacco Research and Intervention and the Wisconsin National Primate Research Center. Medical students have a chance to impact communities across the state through the Wisconsin Partnership Program, which runs health initiatives and research projects and is supported by Blue Cross and Blue Shield United of Wisconsin.
