Training at the UVA School of Medicine is centered on the Next Generation Cells to Society Curriculum, or NxGen, which combines the training of basic and clinical sciences. In addition to the M.D. program, the UVA School of Medicine confers Ph.D. and master’s degrees.

Ph.D. students at the University of Virginia School of Medicine can pursue a biomedical sciences degree (BIMS), among others. Students earning a BIMS do some formal classwork, but also significant laboratory research, during which they rotate among three faculty mentors. BIMS students participate in the research community through research retreats, seminar series, and other events, and they’re also exposed to the clinical aspects of disease.
