The University of Virginia School of Medicine has a strong medical school ranking for both research and primary care, as well as a stated commitment to public service. Training at the UVA School of Medicine is centered on the Next Generation Cells to Society Curriculum, or NxGen, which combines the training of basic and clinical sciences. In addition to the M.D. program, the UVA School of Medicine confers Ph.D. and master’s degrees.
Ph.D. students at the University of Virginia School of Medicine can pursue a biomedical sciences degree (BIMS), among others. Students earning a BIMS do some formal classwork, but also significant laboratory research, during which they rotate among three faculty mentors. BIMS students participate in the research community through research retreats, seminar series, and other events, and they’re also exposed to the clinical aspects of disease.
Other graduate Ph.D. degrees available at the University of Virginia School of Medicine include those in biochemistry, molecular biology, and genetics; biomedical engineering; microbiology, immunology, and infectious diseases; molecular cell and developmental biology; and molecular medicine. Students can also pursue the Neuroscience Graduate Program or the Medical Science Training Program. University of Virginia students interested in earning a graduate M.D. can choose from nearly 70 specialties.
Aside from their studies, UVA medical students can join some of the School of Medicine’s student organizations, which range from the Anesthesiology Interest Group to the Christian Medical Association. School of Medicine students can also volunteer at one of the school’s roughly seven community services sites, such as the Blue Ridge Poison Center, or the Center on Health Disparities.
