At the University of Vermont College of Medicine, students learn through the Vermont Integrated Curriculum, a three-level program. Students first learn Foundations of medicine, then complete Clinical Clerkships, and finally go through Advanced Integration. The College of Medicine is affiliated with Fletcher Allen Health Care, a teaching hospital with patient care sites and outreach clinics throughout Vermont, New York, and New Hampshire. Medical students can also opt for a joint M.D./Ph.D., which takes about seven years to complete. The College of Medicine also has a Biological and Biomedical Sciences Graduate Training Program and is a member of the Consortium of Academic Health Centers for Integrative Medicine.
There are many ways to get involved in research projects, including through any of the 16 academic departments in the College of Medicine. The school uses its location in Burlington, Vt. to address rural medicine issues throughout the state, and students are also often active in local health initiatives like the Vermont Cancer Center.
