Medical School Overview
The Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine (TCOM) at the University of North Texas Health Science Center is the only school of its kind in the state. Its medical school curriculum is Problem-Focused and Application-Oriented (PAC) and guides students through the process of acquiring, comprehending, and then applying knowledge. The school offers a unique four-year rural medicine curriculum, with opportunities for clinical rotations and preceptorships throughout Texas. There are also dual degree opportunities including a D.O. (doctor of osteopathic medicine)/Ph.D. program, which takes between six and seven years to complete, and D.O./M.S. programs, which usually run about five years.
Osteopathic medical students can complete allopathic, military, or osteopathic residencies, and TCOM students have taken residencies and internships throughout the country. TCOM students also have the option to give their education a global focus by completing international rotations in countries such as Russia, Malawi, Israel, and Kenya. After graduation, about 65 percent of TCOM alumni practice primary care medicine.
