The University of Nebraska Medical Center is the only public academic health sciences center in the state. UNMC, as it is known, is located in Omaha, on one of four campuses of the larger University of Nebraska. The school offers Enhanced Medical Education Tracks (or EMET) for students who want specialized training in areas including aging, HIV, preventative medicine, and underserved healthcare. Students can also add to their medical school education through two dual degree programs: an M.D./M.P.H. (master of public health) degree program that takes five years to complete and an M.D./Ph.D. program finished in eight years.

UNMC partners with the Nebraska Medical Center and is also well known for its rural medicine programs. Outside of class, students can choose from about 20 organizations to get involved in, including several professional fraternities, and can get involved in research projects at school facilities including the Eppley Cancer Institute. Further opportunities for involvement include the student-run Sharing, Respect, and Goodlife clinics. For housing, students can live in university-owned units within walking distance of campus, if they wish. Almost half of the health practitioners in Nebraska, including physicians, pharmacists, and allied health professionals, are graduates of UNMC, the school reports.
