To pursue an M.D. degree at the University of Massachusetts—Worcester School of Medicine, a student must be a legal resident of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts—either someone who went to high school in the state or who has lived there for at least five years. Those who are not legal residents of Massachusetts can apply to the joint M.D./Ph.D. program, which is offered through both the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences and the School of Medicine. The School of Medicine is the only public medical school in the Commonwealth and partners with UMass Memorial Health Care.

There are dozens of organizations for medical students to consider, including the Well Being Newspaper, a student-run medical publication that is published in English, Spanish, and Portuguese for underserved patients around the community. Students also coordinate unique programs like Medical Interviewing in Spanish, which teaches future doctors how to converse in the language, and a medical mission trip to the Dominican Republic. There are about 30 centers, programs, and institutes on campus, such as the Center for Health Law and Economics and the Center for Tobacco Treatment. Medical students cannot live on campus.
