Medical School Overview

The CU-Denver Anschutz Medical Campus, home of the University of Colorado—Denver School of Medicine, is located in Aurora, Colo., about eight miles from Denver. The campus is also home to the highly ranked University of Colorado Hospital and Children’s Hospital Colorado. The School of Medicine offers M.D., D.P.T. (Doctor of Physical Therapy), and M.P.A.S. (Master of Physician Assistant Studies) degrees, in addition to a 36-month Physician Assistant program. To earn a joint M.D./Ph.D., students may enroll in the Medical Scientist Training Program (MTSP), which takes eight years to complete.

Medical students advance through four academic phases: Essentials Core, which encompasses the first two phases; Clinical Care; and Advanced Studies. Outside of class, there are about 10 student organizations to check out, including Students for Global Health and Rural Health Scholars. There are also about 40 centers and institutes, including the Barbara Davis Center for Childhood Diabetes, one of the world’s largest type 1 diabetes research and care centers, as well as initiatives such as the AIDS Clinical Trials Unit and a Neuroscience Center and Training Program.

The school also runs a free, eight-week Mini Medical School program, which is not accredited or degree-awarding but offers lectures to anyone who wishes to learn more about the practice of medicine. There is no on-campus housing at the Anschutz Medical Campus, but CU-Denver coordinates an online database of nearby housing options.
