At the University of California—San Diego School of Medicine, interdisciplinary collaboration is encouraged, both within the science curriculum and among other departments at UC San Diego. The Integrated Scientific Curriculum (ISC) meshes clinical medicine and medical science. In addition to instruction through the School of Medicine, students can take courses or complete another degree in areas such as bioengineering and healthcare leadership through the UCSD College of Integrated Life Sciences.
Medical students are grouped into six Academic Communities, which offer counseling, support, and faculty mentorships, and must complete an Independent Study Project before graduation. Students get hands-on clinical instruction at institutions including the UC San Diego Medical Center, the VA San Diego Hospital, the Naval Regional Medical Center, and the Rady Children’s Hospital San Diego.
There are more than 35 student organizations to join, and students can get involved in the USCD Student-Run Free Clinic Project, which provides healthcare to the underserved communities throughout San Diego. Graduate students may live in university-owned apartments near the medical school in La Jolla, if they wish.
