The School of Medicine at University of Alabama—Birmingham (UAB) is centralized in a large university complex that spans more than 80 city blocks, with much of that space dedicated to clinical facilities, research laboratories, classrooms, and surgical suites.

Medical students in the School of Medicine get many opportunities to conduct research if they choose to do so in the summer between their first and second years of school, or after their second year, when they may take a year to do elective research either at UAB or another institution.
