The Oregon Health and Science University is a highly ranked medical school especially renowned for training in primary care, rural medicine, and family medicine. Medical students begin clerkships in their third year and must work in a rural or medically underserved setting before graduation. In their fourth year, M.D. students complete rotations of four-week clerkships. Students learn in the Oregon Health and Science University Hospital and the nearby Portland Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Medical students can also earn a combined M.D./Ph.D., M.D./M.P.H., or M.D./Oral/Maxillofacial Surgery.

OHSU also has a highly ranked 26-month Physician Assistant training program. In addition to the medical degrees, the school offers more than 25 Ph.D. and master’s degree programs, including a Master’s of Clinical Research and M.B.A. in Healthcare Management programs.

OHSU is the only health and research university in Oregon and operates more than 15 centers and institutes on campus, including the Heart Research Center and the Oregon Stroke Center. Students typically live in the surrounding areas of Portland, Ore., and may apply to live in student housing at Portland State University.

Students can take advantage of global opportunities like the Hope Alliance, an annual trip to Peru to work in temporary clinics, and the Himalayan Health Exchange, which sends students to medical and dental camps in India and the Indo-Tibetan borderlands. Outside of class, full-time students have free access to the March Wellness and Fitness Center and can check out student organizations like the Cycling Interest Group and Christian Medical and Dental Association. About three quarters of medical students are from Oregon, and about half take jobs in the state after graduation.
