Medical School Overview

Manhattan’s Mount Sinai School of Medicine has been a leader in curriculum innovation, introducing the nation’s first academic departments of geriatrics, environmental medicine, and occupational medicine. The school also runs unique institutes, such as the Morchand Center for Clinical Competence, aimed at helping students and physicians boost their communication skills, and the Center for Jewish Genetic Diseases, which focuses on disease afflicting Ashkenazi Jews, a community from Eastern Europe. Medical students run the East Harlem Outreach Partnership, or EHHOP, which offers free healthcare to the East Harlem community in New York.

The medical school is adjacent to New York’s Central Park and near Mount Sinai Medical Center, a highly ranked facility best known for its geriatrics department. Notable alumni of the Mount Sinai School of Medicine include Balamurali Ambati, who graduated at age 17 and was recognized as the world’s youngest doctor in 1995, and Steven Galson, former surgeon general of the United States.
