The Michigan State University College of Human Medicine grants doctor of medicine (M.D.) degrees. (MSU also has a College of Osteopathic Medicine, which grants a doctor of osteopathic medicine, or D.O., degree.) During their first year of study, students at the College of Human Medicine take courses in the basics of behavioral sciences, clinical sciences, biological science, and epidemiology. Clinical experience ramps up in the second year, and includes a mix of classroom study on topics such as medical ethics and health policy before students transition to a 77-week clinical experience for their final two years.
Demonstrating the school’s emphasis on community-based medicine, students at the College of Human Medicine complete their clinical study at one of the college’s seven campuses located in communities across Michigan, including Flint, Kalamazoo, Traverse City, and the Upper Peninsula.
The College of Human Medicine’s academic and clinical functions are bolstered by research centers that focus on medical dilemmas such as Parkinson’s disease and breast cancer. In fact, the school’s Breast Cancer and Environment Research Center is one of only four such centers in the country.
