In addition to the standard medical school curriculum, there is a four-year program specific to rural medicine training and joint degree programs including an M.D./M.B.A. through the IU Kelley School of Business, an M.D./Ph.D. program, and a M.D./M.P.H. (master of public health) program.
Students have summer research opportunities after their first year of school and can get involved in hands-on training through projects in Indiana and abroad. The Office of Medical Service Learning coordinates initiatives such as Project Joy, an outreach program to geriatric patients, and Camp M.D., a free summer program for high school students considering a career in medicine. For experiences further afield, medical students can take part in global health projects in Kenya and Honduras, among other destinations.
The IU Medical Center campus is also home to Indiana University Health University Hospital, Wishard Memorial Hospital, Roudebush VA Medical Center, and Riley Hospital for Children. The school also has more than 30 research centers and institutes including the IU Center for Sports Medicine and the Hartford Center of Excellence in Geriatric Medicine. Students can apply to live in the university-owned Campus Apartments, a community for graduate and professional students, if they wish.
