Medical School Overview

The Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth College has an application deadline of November 1. The application fee at Dartmouth College is $130. Its tuition is full-time: $50,646. The faculty-student ratio at Dartmouth College is 2.4:1. The Geisel School of Medicine has 1,064 full- and part-time faculty on staff.

Located in Hanover, N.H., and founded in 1797, Dartmouth Medical School is the fourth-oldest medical school in the country. Today, DMS is a major research institution, in which students work alongside faculty to conduct basic research, clinical trials, health policy analysis, and more.

M.D. students in their first year at DMS are introduced to the basic and fundamental biomedical sciences and to the normal functions of humans. Much of year two is focused on an interdisciplinary pathophysiology program, and in year three, students must complete clerkships in six medical disciplines. In a Dartmouth M.D. student’s fourth year, he or she must complete two more clerkships, as well as a four-week internship, and at least 12 weeks of electives.

Dartmouth Medical School also offers joint programs that combine an M.D. with an M.B.A. or Ph.D. The Dartmouth Medical School hosts several annual events for its students, such as the White Coat Ceremony, when new med students receive their first white coat, and the Transition Ceremony, which celebrates students’ advancement from preclinical work in the first two years to the clinical years of medical school.

About 80 percent of first- and second-year M.D. students participate in community service, and many join the school’s myriad student organizations, which range from student government to special interest groups. Students who need a break from academics can explore the picturesque community of Hanover and the nearby trails, ski areas, and cultural venues.
