Medical School Overview

The School of Medicine at Boston University has an application deadline of November 1. The application fee at Boston University is $110. Its tuition is Full-time: $52,426. The faculty-student ratio at Boston University is 1.9:1. The School of Medicine has 2,383 full- and part-time faculty on staff.

The Boston University Medical Campus dates back to 1848, when it was named the New England Female Medical College—the first institution in the world to offer medical education to women, and the first to graduate an African-American female physician. The Boston University School of Medicine is also the nation’s first combined cancer research and teaching laboratory.

Today, the school is home to more than 640 funded research programs. Students at the Boston University School of Medicine have several distinct ways to earn an M.D., including the Early Medical School Selection Program, which works with historically black colleges and universities, those with large Hispanic populations, and the Indian Health Service. This program provisionally accepts students who have completed two years of undergraduate study, and helps them to gradually transition into medical school throughout the next two years.

Another unique M.D. program offered by the School of Medicine is one that allows recent high school graduates to spend three years in the Boston University College of Arts & Sciences, taking premed, humanities, and social sciences courses, which are joined in the third year by modular medical courses. Those graduates land with both a B.A. and an M.D. Other joint degree programs at the BU School of Medicine include those that combine an M.D. with either a Ph.D., M.B.A., or a master of public health.

BU med students can complement their studies and make friends, too, by exploring the School of Medicine’s more than 30 student organizations, which range from the Asian American Medical Society to the Domestic Awareness Violence Project. Students can also check out the school’s many service learning opportunities.

The School of Medicine at BU provides many sources of advising and support for students, including tutoring programs, Strategies for Success workshops, and peer advising—when students give their classmates non-academic insight on life in the School of Medicine.
