The student body at the University of Texas—Austin School of Law is known for its diversity. UT Law educates more women than any other top public law school in the country, the school reports, and minority students make up about a third of the law school student body. Students join one of eight societies, which coordinate first-year orientation activities, social functions, and public service events.

At the UT School of Law, there are more than 15 clinics in which to get hands-on legal experience, from the Transnational Worker Rights Clinic to the Criminal Defense Clinic. J.D. students can also take internship courses that include work in nonprofit organizations, government agencies, courts, and more. Students can get free tutoring at the Law School Writing Center, which offers individualized lessons on argument structure and rhetorical strategies.

There are more than 30 student organizations to join, including the Texas Oil and Gas Law Society and Assault and Flattery, the law school’s musical theater company. Close to 95 percent of law students live off campus, though graduate students may apply to live in the on-campus University Apartments.

For students pursuing public interest law, the UT Law Loan Repayment Assistance Program (LRAP) offers financial aid to in-debt graduates earning less than $50,000 for full-time, law-related public service work. Notable alumni include Paul Begala, political consultant and former adviser during Bill Clinton’s presidency, and Larry Macon, an attorney who holds the world record for running the most marathons in one year (106 in 2010).
