Law School Overview

At the University of Iowa College of Law, students set much of their own legal curriculum after the first year of school. Students can complete joint degrees through other departments at the University of Iowa, such as a J.D./M.B.A. through the Henry B. Tippie School of Management or a J.D./M.P.H. (master of public health) or J.D./M.H.A  (master of health administration) through the College of Public Health.

The College of Law has an In-House Clinic, which is run by student interns like a law firm and gives students experience in practice areas such as consumer rights and criminal defense. In addition, the school’s externship program matches students in court systems and offices both in Iowa and nationally.

On campus, students can get involved with more than 25 student organizations, including legal fraternities such as Phi Delta Phi and Phi Alpha Delta, and several law journals including the Iowa Law Review and the Journal of Corporation Law. Because Iowa Law is one of seven schools in the London Law Consortium, law students can spend a semester studying in England, among other global term options.

After graduation, about 40 percent of College of Law alumni remain in the state to practice. Some of the school’s most notable graduates include Carol Havemann Lynch, General Upstream Tax Counsel for ExxonMobil; John Bouma, managing partner of Snell & Wilmer; and Coleen Rowley, a retired special agent for the FBI.
