With a student-to-faculty ratio of 13:1, the University of Illinois—Urbana-Champaign College of Law offers its first year students small class sections and a variety of options to specialize their legal degree. There are about a dozen specialty areas within its legal curriculum, such as environmental law and intellectual property law. There are also many joint and dual degree programs, allowing students to earn a J.D./M.B.A. through the University of Illinois College of Business, a J.D./M.A. in Journalism, a J.D/M.S. in Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences, and more.

Nearly a dozen clinics give students hands-on experience in areas such as civil litigation, family advocacy, and international human rights, and simulation courses such as the Counseling, Fact Investigation, and Interviewing class lend an experiential component to legal education. Students can also get involved in more than 35 student organizations and several law journals, including the University of Illinois Law Review, the Elder Law Journal, and the Journal of Law, Technology & Policy. There are more than a dozen study abroad options for students who want to learn about legal systems around the world, in locations including Australia, Egypt, Singapore, and Hong Kong.

The University of Illinois College of Law offers a Loan Repayment Assistance Program (LRAP) to qualifying students. The law school has graduated more than 10,000 lawyers practicing worldwide, including Albert Jenner, Jr., name partner at law firm Jenner & Block, and Philip McConnaughay, dean of the Penn State University Dickinson School of Law.
