The University of California Hastings College of Law is located in San Francisco, blocks away local, state, and federal courts. Students can focus their studies in a variety of concentrations including intellectual property law, social justice lawyering, and law and health sciences. Legal writing skills are also emphasized; students will take a small-group writing course in their first year and must write a substantial legal paper before graduation.
Students at the Hastings College of Law get hands-on training in a variety of in-house and out-placement clinics, as well as in more than 10 simulation courses. Hastings also has a large judicial externship program, which more than 100 students take advantage of each year. UC Hastings has a wide variety of legal journals, including the Hastings Women’s Law Journal, the Hastings Science and Technology Law Journal, and the Hastings Communications and Entertainment Law Journal (Comm/Ent). For a break from school work, students can get involved in more than 60 student organizations, including the Legal Eagles Hastings Running Club and Gleeks at Hastings, and can partake in various school events like Beer on the Beach, an afternoon reception, and The Cabaret, an annual student talent show. Hastings has a housing community exclusively for law students, though students can also live off campus.
Notable alumni of the Hastings College of Law include Gregg Jarrett, a FOX News Channel anchor; Richard Thalheimer, founder and chief executive officer of consumer electronics company The Sharper Image; and Jeff Adachi, a public defender in San Francisco.
