The Tulane University Law School in uptown New Orleans is one of the oldest law schools in the country. After a required first year course load, only one course on the legal profession is mandatory. In addition to its traditional legal education, Tulane Law School offers specialty courses and certificates in maritime law, European legal studies, sports law, and more. Students also have a variety of joint degree options including a J.D./M.B.A. or a J.D./Master of Accounting through the Freeman School of Business. Tulane Law School does not offer a part-time J.D. program.
Public interest and clinics are a focus at Tulane Law School, and J.D. students must complete at least 30 hours of pro bono work before graduation. There are about 40 student organizations and more than five legal journals, including the Tulane Maritime Law Journal, the Tulane Journal of International & Comparative Law, and the Tulane Law Review. Law students may live on campus, but most choose to find private housing throughout New Orleans.
Tulane Law School offers a Loan Repayment Assistance Program (LRAP) for graduates who work in the public sector and whose incomes fall below a specific level. Notable alumni of Tulane Law School include David Vitter, a senator from Louisiana, and Terry O’Neill, president of the National Organization for Women (NOW).
