Engineering School Overview

The School of Engineering at Vanderbilt University has an application deadline of January 15. Its tuition is full-time: $1,712 per credit and part-time: $1,712 per credit. The 2012 Ph.D. student-faculty ratio is 4.5:1. The School of Engineering at Vanderbilt University has 86 full-time faculty on staff.

Vanderbilt University’s School of Engineering focuses research efforts in four broad areas: energy and environment, healthcare, defense and national security, and information technology. The collaborative research centers at Vanderbilt combine engineering expertise with the university’s other schools and departments. Graduate students at the Nashville school can partner with faculty exploring research areas across a dozen centers and institutes, including the Center for Intelligent Systems and the Institute for Space and Defense Electronics.

The diverse range of research opportunities complements the degree offerings at Vanderbilt’s School of Engineering. Graduate students can earn a master of science, master of engineering, or Ph.D. from one of the school’s eight programs. Those departments include biomedical engineering, chemical and biomolecular engineering, civil engineering, electrical engineering, environmental, mechanical engineering, computer science, and material science.

In addition to classroom and research opportunities, graduate students at Vanderbilt can participate in the Graduate Student Council, or lend a hand to community outreach groups on campus. Students can also network with the engineering community through one of several professional societies with chapters on campus, such as the Chemical Engineering Graduate Student Association.

Notable alumni from Vanderbilt University’s School of Engineering include Dennis Bottorff, chairman of Council Ventures, a venture capital firm; and David Dyer, former president and CEO of Tommy Hilfiger Corp.
