The University of Virginia’s School of Engineering and Applied Science focuses research efforts in four broad areas: bioengineering, nanotechnology, information science and technology, and energy and environment. Graduate students at the school can partner with faculty exploring research areas ranging from tissue engineering to data mining at one of the 40 centers, institutes, and laboratories housed at the school’s Charlottesville campus.

These research centers include the Center for Applied Biomechanics, which studies the impact and injury caused by high speed automobile crashes, and the Center for Safe and Secure Nuclear Energy. The diverse range of research opportunities complements the degree offerings at the University of Virginia’s School of Engineering and Applied Science. Graduate students can earn a master of science, master of engineering, or Ph.D. from one of the school’s 10 degree programs. Those departments include biomedical engineering, chemical engineering, civil engineering, and materials science engineering, among others. The school also offers an accelerated master’s degree in systems engineering, and a joint M.E./M.B.A. degree program.

In addition to classroom and research opportunities, graduate students at the University of Virginia can gain international experience through study abroad programs in places such as Germany, Argentina, Japan, Brazil, Australia, and France. Service learning opportunities in Guatemala, Panama, Nicaragua, and South Africa are also available to graduate engineering students.
