Engineering School Overview
The Andrew and Erna Viterbi School of Engineering at University of Southern California has an application deadline of December 1. The application fee is $85 for U.S. residents and $85 for international students. Its tuition is full-time: $28,242 per year and part-time: $1,569 per credit. The 2012 Ph.D. student-faculty ratio is 5.6:1. The Andrew and Erna Viterbi School of Engineering at University of Southern California has 177 full-time faculty on staff.
At the Viterbi School of Engineering, graduate students can earn degrees full or part time, in person or online. Full-time students can complete their degree in as little as 1.5 years. About 30 of the school’s 50 master’s programs are offered online through the USC Engineering Distance Education Network. Distance students may opt to blend their education, spending some time in classrooms and completing other work through the computer. There are also about 10 Ph.D. programs offered in areas like astronautical and electrical engineering.
The USC campus is home to several famous Viterbi research centers, including the Information Science Institute, where the Internet Domain Name System and other Web technologies were founded. Viterbi also receives funding from some elite institutions, including the National Science Foundation and the U.S. Army, to run other research centers. The campus is one of only a handful in the country to house two active Engineering Research Centers that receive funding from the National Science Foundation, and the Institute for Creative Technologies examines what artificial intelligence, video games, and virtual human training, among other developments, could mean for the Army.
Viterbi educates about 3,800 students, all of whom can apply to live in university-owned, off-campus apartment buildings. In their free time, innovative engineering students can get involved in contests like the Maseeh Entrepreneurship Prize, which awards $50,000 and mentoring for effective business ideas and inventions.
