Engineering School Overview
The College of Engineering at University of Florida has an application deadline of June 1. The application fee is $30 for U.S. residents and $30 for international students. Its tuition is full-time: $12,589 per year (in-state); full-time: $29,983 per year (out-of-state); part-time: $525 per credit (in-state); and part-time: $1,249 per credit (out-of-state). The 2012 Ph.D. student-faculty ratio is 3.7:1. The College of Engineering at University of Florida has 258 full-time faculty on staff.
The College of Engineering at the University of Florida in Gainesville is home nearly two dozen research centers and institutes, including the Howard T. Odum Center for the Wetlands, the Bridge Software Institute, and the Center for Intelligent Machines and Robotics. Available research areas at the College of Engineering vary from nanotechnology to imaging technology to manufacturing.
This diverse range of research opportunities complements the school’s graduate degree options. Students can earn a master of science or engineering in about a dozen different areas, such as coastal and oceanographic engineering, nuclear engineering sciences, biomedical engineering, and aerospace engineering. Doctoral degrees are also offered in each of the engineering disciplines.
In addition to its full-time, in-person graduate programs, the College of Engineering offers an online master’s degree from the following engineering departments: computer and information science and engineering, civil and coastal engineering, electrical and computer engineering, environmental engineering sciences, materials science and engineering, mechanical and aerospace engineering, and industrial and systems engineering.
Outside of the classroom, nature enthusiasts can visit the world’s largest butterfly research center, or the largest occupied bat house— home to nearly 100,000 bats—in North America. Or, explore nearby Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park for canoeing, kayaking, hiking, and bird watching.
Notable alumni from the University of Florida’s College of Engineering include Lesa Roe, director of NASA’s Langley Research Center, and James Thompson, former deputy administrator for NASA.
