Engineering School Overview

The Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science at Columbia University has an application deadline of December 15. The application fee is $85 for U.S. residents and $85 for international students. Its tuition is full-time: $39,360 per year and part-time: $1,640 per credit. The 2013 Ph.D. student-faculty ratio is 5.1:1. The Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science at Columbia University has 149 full-time faculty on staff.

There are about 2,000 graduate students at the Columbia University Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS)—about 500 more than the number of undergraduate students at the school.

Graduate students can choose from more than 10 departments, including biomedical engineering and materials science. Students can also pursue innovative dual degree programs, such as the dual M.S. in Journalism and Computer Science, offered in conjunction with the Columbia School of Journalism, and a joint M.B.A./M.S. in Earth Resources Engineering through Columbia Business School.

Columbia Engineering runs about 20 research centers, including the Columbia Water Center and the Center for Life Cycle Analysis. The school also houses cutting-edge research facilities such as the Botwinick Multimedia Learning Laboratory, home to 3-D modeling and animation projects. In addition, The National Science Foundation funds three Integrative Graduate Education and Research Training (IGERT) programs for students: Urbanization Challenges; Optical Techniques for Actuation, Sensing, and Imaging of Biological Systems; and Study of Multiscale Phenomena in Soft Materials. Fellows receive $30,000 toward their studies.

Students may apply for on-campus housing, though the school notes that spaces are very limited and gives priority to doctoral, track, and funded students. Distance students can pursue an online engineering degree with the help of the Columbia Video Network, which offers courses, certificates, and degree programs.
