The University of Washington College of Education offers traditional master’s and doctoral degree programs for teachers, administrators, and clinicians, as well as some unique programs for students pursuing specialty areas. There is a yearlong master’s degree in Intercollegiate Athletic Leadership, for example, a program for future sports administrators offered in conjunction with the university’s Foster School of Business.

Regardless of program, the College of Educations stresses hands-on experience to supplement academics. Master’s degree candidates spend nearly the same amount of time working in school classrooms as they do learning, and other programs incorporate internships and research. There are about 10 research centers on campus where students and faculty examine pressing issues in education reform and child development. The school also has initiatives like the Experimental Education Unit, a program for special needs children from birth through kindergarten.

For those with teaching experience, the College of Education has development programs, like the one-year Danforth Educational Leadership Program for prospective principals and the three-year, part-time Leadership for Learning program that readies teachers to become district leaders in three years. Graduate students can live in university-owned apartments or can get help finding other housing in Seattle through the university’s Off-Campus Housing Affairs Office.
