Education School Overview

Graduate students at the Stanford School of Education can specialize in more than 10 areas, earning a master’s or a doctorate degree. The Stanford Teacher Education Program (STEP) stresses a combination of education theory and clinical work for its master’s degree candidates. Joint degree programs are offered in conjunction with the highly ranked Stanford Graduate School of Business, where students complete a master of education and a master of business administration in two years, and Stanford Law School, for students also pursuing a J.D.

Through the Knowledge at Work program, students have a multitude of opportunities to put classroom lessons to the test. Students can get involved at the East Palo Alto Academy, a charter school the university runs, or volunteer at the Stanford Haas Center for Public Service. There are also a few student organizations to get involved in, such as the Language, Equity & Education Policy Working Group and SchoolsOUT, a group that examines homosexual issues in education.

Graduate students are guaranteed on-campus housing as long as they submit their application on time. For a break from class, downtown Palo Alto, Calif. is a quick trip away on Stanford’s free public transportation system, the Marguerite Shuttle. Close to three-quarters of STEP alumni stay in California after graduation, and many graduates of the Stanford School of Education have gone on to become college professors and administrators.
